Metal - Pagan Metal - a direction in extreme metal, exploiting various elements of paganism. The Norwegian band In the Woods ... is considered as one of the first pagan metal bands. Metal Hammer magazine notes that the song To Enter Pagan from the demo recording of Primordial's Dark Romanticism contributed to the genre.
Paganism in heavy music was used as far back as the 1970s and 1980s by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Manowar, however most pagan metal bands allude to the influence of later Bathory, Enslaved, Amorphis and Skyclad. Moreover, the first two are known as representatives of viking metal, and the second are folk metal.
Folk metal was associated with paganism from the very beginning when Martin Walkyier left his former band Sabbat to form Skyclad, in particular because the band “did not want to go deeper into paganism”. The lyrics of Skyclad were associated with paganism. For Ville Sorvali from Moonsorrow, the label “pagan metal” is preferred, “because it expresses ideology, but does not say anything about the music itself.” Other groups that prefer the term pagan metal are Cruachan, Eluveitie, Obtest, and Skyforger.
